Mayor Speaks with Wanhua District Borough Chiefs

During his meeting with borough chiefs from Wanhua District on July 30, Mayor Hau Lung-bin voiced his support for the proposal of establishing a pedestrian area along Chengdu Road Lane 27 and Emei Street Lane 6.

The idea for establishing the new pedestrian area came from the borough chief of Ximen Borough Yeh Mu-lin. He noted that currently both lanes are open to traffic, creating dangerous situations where motorcycles rush by people visiting roadside shops. He suggests that closing the area to traffic would create an environment more friendly and accessible to shoppers.

The two lanes are key passages linking up different sections of the Ximen commercial district – including Chengdu Road, Emei Street, and Hanzhong Street – and house an array of shops and restaurants, attracting large crowds.

Deputy Commissioner of Urban Development Department Pien Tzu-shu pointed out that it is possible to seal off the lanes and transform them into pedestrian areas. The agency will assess the surrounding area with a trial run lasting a few months before making the final decision.

On another issue, Chief of Jinde Borough Hung Hsiu-chih requested city hall to look into possible uses of the deserted veteran’s printing factory in the neighborhood. The facility shut down many years ago and the lack of maintenance has made it a health and security risk for local community.

The mayor gave the Department of Environmental Protection one week’s time to investigate if there’s any wrong-doing. As for how to reuse the facility, he asked both the Department of Cultural Affairs and the New Construction Office to assess the possibility of revitalizing the facility through other uses.
